Google has made its Gemini 4 Argon model broadly available and, as a thank-you, priced API access at two dollars per million input tokens and ten per million output, "for a limited time". Developers read the phrase "limited time" and began preparing for the funeral of their budgets.

A hastily called meeting of startups agreed on a plan: build everything now, ship it before the price changes, and then pretend to be surprised. One founder reported that he had already used his entire year of runway on a chatbot that just says "wow" in six languages.

Google's head of Developer Warmth, Nina Tokenstein, said the promotion was designed "to let creators experiment". She declined to define the end date, explaining that dates, like prices, are "a living concept". Asked if prices would go up, she smiled in a way that could be heard.

Cloud-cost experts recommended caution. "It's like buying a dog," said one, "and learning that the dog is $2 but the leash is the national budget." A graph circulating online showed the typical lifecycle: delight, adoption, panic, spreadsheet.

Independent developers described the offer as generous, because they have no ability to see the future. The future, meanwhile, was seen on a sticky note taped to the server: "THANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS (UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE)".
