The company said it needed no money. The investors said the same, and meant it.

An Australian AI data-centre operator has pulled its planned stock market debut after investor demand turned out to be, in the words of local press, lacklustre. The company will now pursue private financing, which is finance for people who have already been told no by strangers.

Executives had pitched the float with a slide called "Compute Is The New Oil". Investors, who have seen the old oil, asked whether the new oil also catches fire. "Metaphorically yes," said CFO Gareth Cooling, "but we have a very strong fire-suppression slide."

The company's chief evangelist, Jazz Wattage, said the withdrawal was "a strategic pause for the market to catch up with our vision". The market, reached for comment, said it was busy catching up with its rent.

Retail investors who had been hoping to buy in remarked that they were relieved. One said: "I'm not saying a hundred megawatts of GPUs is a bubble, I'm just saying I watched it hum and it sounded worried."

The firm insists the data centres remain bullish. Inside, rows of servers are reportedly running at full power to generate a single reassuring pie chart, titled "demand", which is largely a picture of a pie.
